Evolutionary Tree I made this tree, which shows many of the common species, but the tree does not do justice to true biodiversity. There are about 70,000,000 species currently alive. And, of course, the vast majority of all species that ever lived are now long extinct. So my tree is just the barest of frameworks. Try to imagine it with about a bazillion more branches. You'll have to zoom in quite a bit to see the individual species over on the right. Probably the biggest change in the science of evolution over the last few decades has been the cladistic revolution. All groupings are now based on "clades", common ancestry, rather than any distinguishing characteristics. For example, birds must be included in the dinosaur clade, in the reptile clade, and in the tetrapod (4-legged animal) clade. Most interestingly, birds (and many other animals) must also be included in the fish clade because the common ancestor of all fish includes tetrapods amongst its descendants.
